Santa Maria Del Oro: Summertime Lake Destination

Santa Maria Del Oro is a beautiful and magical place. It is a volcanic crater lake that is located just outside of the town of Santa Maria del Oro in the state of Nayarit. From Puerto Vallarta, it is a 3.5 hour drive to this most beautiful place. In the summertime, you can find cooler temperatures and a mountainesque aesthetic that provides the perfect juxtaposition to Vallarta’s tropical clime.

santa maria del oro

The water is unlike any water I have ever felt, it is the perfect temperature and very soft!! I loved going for a morning swim. We stayed at a very cute, yet rustic, complex called Bungalows Koala. They offer a mix of houses, single rooms, and camping options for visitors to stay at. They have a fantastic little lakefront restaurant which serves the specialty “chicharrones de pescado” or fried fish morsels. It was delicious! The hotel also had kayaks for rent which is an amazing way to explore the medium sized lake.

In the area, you can also explore numerous waterfalls, go horseback riding, and partake in an array of watersports. Visiting Santa Maria del Oro is a “must” for any PV resident. I would recommend a visit in the summer when the temps are perfect and the foliage is bright green from the all the rains. It is truly a beautiful place, perfect for relaxing and disconnecting from the hustle and bustle of the city! My family and I will definitely be back next summer!

My Cacao Recipe!

I have been a coffee drinker since I can remember. Just recently, a good friend turned me on to the benefits of drinking cacao. She had just made the switch and was loving it, so I thought I’d give it a try too! Well, it’s been 4 months, and I can say I LOVE my new morning routine. I want to share with you how I prepare this authentic “hot chocolate” drink.

Ingredients

The secret to a great cup of cacao is of course the cacao! I find mine at the La Comer grocery store next to Costco. There are a few options, but I like to go for something grown here in Mexico as this is the birth place of chocolate!

  • 1 heaping table spoon of CACAO in powder form
  • 1 handful of whole raw cashews
  • 1.5 cups hot water
  • sweetener of your choice (I use agave syrup)
  • optional: cinnamon and vanilla to taste.

Preparation:

I start by boiling the water. While it’s boiling, I throw a handful of cashews into the blender. When the water is ready, add to the blender and blend on high until you have a smooth, homemade cashew milk! Then, add the heaping tablespoon of cacao powder, a spoon (or two!) of agave syrup, and any other spices you love. Blend on high. Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!

This is a very simple and modern way to enjoy a beverage that has deep roots in indigenous Mexican culture. They say cacao is a “heart opener” and will create a lovely energetic boost.

Adventure in San Sebastian!

Last weekend, my family and I enjoyed a great little adventure into the mountains. With summer, comes high temps and humidity. Puerto Vallarta continues to be a tropical paradise with lots of beauty, but sometimes you just have to escape the heat for a few days. San Sebastian del Oeste is the perfect day trip (or weekender!) to get out of town and enjoy mild temperatures and some pine trees up in the mountains.

Located just 90 minutes from downtown PV, you can quickly climb the scenic mountain road and be in a totally different environment. San Sebastian is an old mining town that has kept its sleepy charm and colonial aesthetic. It has been designated by the federal government as a “Pueblo Magico” and therefore will be protected as a cultural and heritage site.

My family loves to head up for some relaxation. We like to sit in the plaza and people watch, drive up to La Bufa (the top most point of the mountain which sits at 8000 ft.), and enjoy warm beverages in our favorite cafe El Fortin. If you’re looking for a little more adventure, there are ATVs to rent, horses to ride, and hikes to discover.

Last weekend, we discovered a new spot which included a cave and a cenote full of quartz crystals, it was absolutely magical!

Puerto Vallarta itself is an incredible place to live, you could spend a lifetime exploring all that the city has to offer. But what makes it special, is its proximity to various other towns that offer distinct cultural experiences and a ton of adventure as well!

What’s your favorite day trip when you’re looking for a little adventure? I would love to hear from you in the comments below! -Christina

Feeding 100 Families at a Time

Feeding 100 Families was created in an effort to help some of the most vulnerable families in Puerto Vallarta and Bahia de Banderas, who have been terribly affected by the Covid 19 Pandemic.

For those who’ve had the pleasure to visit Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and/or those who live here permanently, we can agree that the area depends 100% on tourism to survive and to provide for families. As a result of Covid 19, there’s been a dramatic drop in tourism that has been devastating, due to travel restrictions and health emergency.

Feeding 100 Families is geared toward reaching those affected families in the inner communities, where current aid and food supplies rarely make it. This is a charity/food bank dedicated to assisting families who’ve been affected by the epidemic Covid 19, which has depleted the Tourism in the cities of Puerto Vallarta & Bahia de Banderas and have taken away jobs. The charity is an outreach to help those families AS MUCH AS THE DONATIONS permit.

The main focus of Feeding 100 Families is on the “Inner communities” where current aid and food supplies rarely make it and because of the lack of resources for those families. The charity provides 100 bags of food supplies or a warm meal EVERY 2 weeks for over 15 different inner-communities.

The individuals in charge of the foundation are Dwight Blake & Lucia Guzman of Dwight Blake Entertainment, Marcelo Martin & Pamela Martin of La Patagonia Restaurant Argentina and Billaly Inurrigarro & Sasha Inurigarro of Hecho en Mexico Pastries. They have joined forces to extend their expertise, time and kindness to make this outreach a reality. Dwight Blake explains, “As many of us are immigrants to Mexico, we’ve fallen in love with the country and its people, and are dedicated to helping the Mexican people in whatever way we can. We can’t do this alone, so we ask you to consider donating whatever you can to these beautiful families.’

Here is how it works:

Feeding 100 Families works together with “DIF” (Desarrollo Integral de la Familia), a government agency helping underprivileged families. Feeding 100 Families (on a rotating basis) donates and delivers to 100 families AT A TIME who are in the DIF registry. DIF directs the charity to communities (who are more vulnerable and are in need) and informs the community leaders of the date and time Feeding 100 Families will arrive. An area is prepared and the community is advised on the safety protocols.

A typical family (4 members in the household) can survive on USD $25-30 per week and may even stretch a bit beyond this. The charity provides basic food supplies such as Rice, Flour, Sugar, milk, Cereal, toilet paper, soap.

If you would like to sponsor or be an ANGEL for one or more of these families, a link is provided below. The smiles that are seen on the faces every time a meal is shared or a bag of groceries is given , are just breathtaking and heartbreaking at the same time.

An ANGEL Donor is someone who commits to donating USD$60 dollar every month or $30 dollar every two weeks.

With your help, Feeding 100 Families can continue the great work that they’ve begun. Hopefully, this assistance won’t be needed for an indefinite time, but considering the scope of this pandemic, it’s highly unlikely that this need will end soon. It is expected that some of these families will be without jobs for a very long time. We continue to hope and pray for the best and encourage you to help with this very worthy effort.

TO DONATE TO THIS WORTHY CAUSE PLEASE VISIT THEIR GO FUND ME PAGE: FEEDING 100 FAMILIES AT A TIME. Please let me know if you have any questions in the comments below. -Christina
